Class of '62 Cruises to Mexico With Memories and GoodTimes

Well, you just should have been there. . . . Thirteen of our class of '62, with spouses, went on a 4-night cruise in February to Key West and Cozumel. Boarding was super fast and easy and we encountered no security problems.

It was a time of renewing old friendships and making new ones. Somehow we were just comfortable with each other; like finding a pair of old slippers that were oh so comfy.

We had three big dining tables together and even had three birthday cakes delivered for our collective 60th birthday party!

Some went on shore excursions and others just wandered the streets and shops of Key West or took a tour of the beautiful beaches of Cozumel, ending with a drink in a gorgeous beach-side restaurant under the palms. Some stayed up 'til the wee hours, talking and listening to a combo in a five-story lobby/lounge after a day by the pool.

Entertainer-of-the-group award goes to John Karn for his karaoke performance.

Well, you just had to be there. . . Fran Wasserstrom and Carol Miley Middaugh worked hard to make this a memorable trip, including Bexley quizzes and games and prizes.

Several of us are excited about a repeat trip somewhere and are starting to work on it. So, save your dollars and vacation time and think of joining the class in a year or two or three for another reunion vacation.

All of us wished it had lasted longer and we missed you not being there in the balmy islands with us.

You just should have been there. . . .

Happy 60th Birthday to all of us from Sondra Schwartz:

    I remember Bexley 1950-2004!

What have we been doing for 42 years?

The happiest day of my life was the day I graduated from Bexley High school because "I would never have to see those kids again". . . but I didn't mean you! Then after many frivolous and unusual adventures, which only the young and foolish are unwise and courageous enough to attempt, I became an inner-city high school teacher in Oakland, California . . . and I have been teaching in high school since 1973.

Spending all those years with teenagers, I developed really great adolescent skills. But in some ways that I truly resent, I failed to become sophisticated. So that is my current goal (laugh here please).

We couldn't imagine that the year 2004 would ever arrive! And here it is and now we are here together counting our blessings to be alive and well:

This missive is dedicated to Linda Bender, my best friend in grade school,

who died from cancer treatments; and to Ira Gaffin, who taught me the word "perspicacious" and introduced me to science fiction and the stars, who died of Aids when he was 50, following his amazing life as a hemophiliac (he didn't expect to live past 30).

I came to the 10-year high school reunion where I told Jim Westwater that I hated him in high School; and where Peggy Gregg who was a great friend in Camp Fire Girls wore orange satin hot pants and long coat (am I remembering correctly?) and was incredulous that I was driving a Yellow Cab in San Francisco, California.

I came to the 25-year high school reunion with my three year old daughter and Jim Westwater was changing.

And now here I am at our shared 60th birthday--42nd reunion--and I am grateful to be here with all of you to reconnect and rekindle the potential of my misguided youth. Oh to be so wise. I guess it took 60 years. Thanks for coming. I'm so appreciative to be a part of this gathering.

    This is some of what I remember about Bexley. . . . . . . .

I remember Ms. Marsh from fourth grade at Montrose who taught me to write so very neat and slanted and compulsively. I cherished her class.

I remember Mr. Norton in 6th grade in that tiny classroom where Ronnie Clowson was the tallest and I was the shortest and we liked each other.

I remember Elwin Falor who taught me the words of Robert Frost "Two roads diverge into a wood. . .and 'I took the one less traveled by. . .and that made all the difference.'"

I remember Mrs. Minton who taught me how to be a teacher. They say you teach the way you were taught and for both good and bad, I teach very much like the way she taught me. I remember her telling us, "Be careful when you go to college! If anyone offers you a little skinny cigarette, don't take one! Don't smoke!"

I remember Mr. Ridenour's granny glasses that he looked over or under to see us with his nose in the air. I laughed my entire algebra class.

I remember Margaret Love who called me "little yellow bird' when I was 16, in the study hall and in health class. I tried to call her about ten years ago to tell her I was a high school teacher and to thank her for all that she did for us. She had dementia and couldn't hear or understand most of what I said, but I repeated it so she might get my gratitude for her challenges. She told us about toxic shock syndrome, and she was right.

As far as Bexley is concerned, I have some regrets: One, that I didn't raise my daughter there. (Sometimes I'm sorry I didn't stay, but that's another book entirely.) I have such gratitude for my values, my education, my belief in myself, my high school compañeros and my long-time friends. For the safety of my childhood and the trees and flowers that are still the same 50 years later and no bars of Bexley.

As far as we are concerned. . . we are fortunate that we have made it thus far. I consider this reunion birthday celebration a right of passage for myself as important for me as my daughter's Bat Mitzvah was for her. I am proud of the choices I have made in my life that bring me on my life's journey to share the celebration of my 60th birthday with you and yours.

Perhaps we shall continue to connect for future celebrations. It is a very good omen for us to come together and to cherish one another and to honor our arrival at this very spiritual place in our lives. Thanks for including me and for welcoming me back. We have so much to share. I have many stories to tell, if anyone is interested in listening, and I have a great interest and some skill in being a good listener, along with a developing compassion and patience with myself and others that I am happy to practice with you all.

    Sondra

    Class "Bio's" and Musings

Mary Ahlborn Snyder This past year I was honored by the American Business Women's Association Coastal N.C. "Woman of the Year," but my greatest joy was the birth of my granddaughter, Meaghan Elizabeth Snyder. My dad, Eugene Ahlborn, who taught almost all of our class in junior high, passed away almost a year ago.

    H. William (Bill) Barr, III August 6th, 2002 Sorry I could not make the reunion, but we are in the middle of supporting our kids as they each give us another grandchild. Our daughter Amy and her husband Blake gave us a beautiful baby girl grandchild (their second) on July 25th. They live in Boone, NC, and are associated with Appalachian State University. Between the two of them they have 4 degrees from ASU. Our son Todd and his wife are expecting their second son any day. He is a marketing manager for Red Hat in Raleigh, NC. Todd and Jess have 5 degrees from UNC Chapel Hill. We are blessed to have both of our children and their children within 2-1/2 hours from Charlotte, NC where we live.

Karen Phillips ('63) and I have been married almost 36 years. She is a monitor for new drug clinical trials and travels extensively in the eastern US. When she is home, she works in her office in the front bedroom.
I left the banking industry in 1994 and have not looked back. I found my calling as an adult training professional, and am currently delivering a sales training program called Solution Selling® all over the US and parts of the world. After many years with little travel opportunities, I am enjoying seeing the world on other people's money. My office is in the middle bedroom, so I have the short commute. Ha.
My mother sold her home on Pleasant Ridge in 2000 and moved to be near my brother Bob ('64) in San Diego, CA. She continues to enjoy her social life at 85 and independent living. I hope she is staying off the freeways, as she tends to "drive her age" when she gets on one. Scary thought.

We feel blessed as a family, and look forward to many more years together in "the promised land" of North Carolina. Many people move here for retirement, but we have been here since 1980. Karen's dad still lives in the Columbus area (Westerville) so we get back occasionally, but we don't miss the winters or the labor unions. We wish all our classmates well, and hope to reconnect when we can. Bill & Karen

Sam D. Bates Retired Sales Manager. Still married (35 years) to high school sweetheart Mary Lynn McClure Bates. Children: Susan Bates Giffin, 28, married; David Bates, 26, married. Both college graduates. Building a condo in Ft. Myers (ready Sept., 2002). So 6 mo. in Cols. & 6 mo. in Ft. Myers. Still very active in the Bexley Lions International service club. Drum major at O.S.U. Alumni days, 5 each year, still twirling. Mary Lynn retired Worthington school teacher.

Joann Bell Sudduth Dury and I are retired and live near Worthington. We are enjoying traveling. In 2001 we took a wonderful trip to Australia and New Zealand for 3 weeks. A must- see for everyone. This July we went to England for 3 weeks, traveling around the countryside. My son Bruce Kaiser lives in Worthington and my daughter Amy Kaiser Spears lives in San Diego. My Mother, Virginia Bell is now 93 and doing great. She is always on the go.

Rick Bender I married Sue Praver from Eastmoor in 1965 and we have been living in California since 1966. We have two children and three grand children. I am a C.P.A. with my own practice. We moved to a cottage by the beach in Santa Monica about 10 years ago and we feel like we are on a perpetual vacation. When I am not busy with my grandchildren, I enjoy playing golf, drive two Corvettes (1962 and 2002), and go to Dodger games. Sue and I also enjoy our community involvements in the Israel Children's Centers, the Los Angeles Jewish Homes for the Aging, the John Wayne Cancer Institute, and our synagogue.

Larry Berlin I have operated my own law office for the past 30 years and cherish the independence. Fortunately, I have had many interesting and challenging cases and enjoy the practice of law. I still love sports and play high level tennis 3 to 4 times per week all year round. I have been married do Donna, an OSU professor, for 31 years and while we both work very hard, we also enjoy an active leisure life which includes a lot of winter travel to Aruba.

Our greatest success and greatest source of happiness and pride stem from our daughters, Joy, age 27, and Mandy, age 20. Joy is a gifted teacher who recently married her boyfriend of 8 years, and Mandy is an OSU junior who plays Club Lacrosse for OSU against other Big Ten schools. Guess who attends the games! Both Joy and Mandy have excelled in all significant aspects of their young lives, including the achievement of superior academic records in college. Importantly, both have developed a true sense of respect and compassion for other people and Joy and Mandy are both kind, loving and caring young women. Donna and I are very, very lucky.

Diane Borror Richardson: The family is getting ready for my younger daughter's wedding. Ashley has asked me to walk her down the aisle. (My husband passed away very suddenly) I'll need a good joke and a stiff drink!!! Traveling is still my favorite "hobby". I have met a lot of interesting people and have lots of visitors. Two Danish families just visited me. They were friends of friends. We had a great time! I would like to hear from classmates.

If you are in the Washington, D.C. area, my phone number is 703-478-698

Kenneth N. Cohen Married in 1993 to Paula, my tennis partner. We had our daughter Morrisa in 1995, and I'm now the proud father of 11 month old Cloe, a Shih Tzu puppy! Work in property management.

Cindy Crall Hanson How do you put your life into two small paragraphs? It's easy when the last four years have been the best yet. Bob and I retired from Dallas and moved to Tucson, AZ. We live in an adult community called SaddleBrooke. We love it. We live on one of three golf courses and our vista is the Catalina Mountains. We play lots of golf and tennis. We have traveled quite a bit too. We spent last February in Australia and New Zealand. Our lifestyle is active and very busy.

The most exciting happenings in our lives are our six grandchildren. My two sons, David and Michael live in Hinsdale, Ill. David has three children: Noah, 5; Maggie, 3; and Lucy, 1. Michael just had his first child, Charlie, who is three months. Bob's son Paul lives in St. Paul, MN. He has two children: Eva, 2 and Wyatt, 2 months. We are blessed, and we see them as often as possible.

Both of my brothers, Colby and Butch, live in Columbus. My Dad passed away seven years ago; however my Mom is doing great at the age of 83. Our life is very full and we are enjoying every minute of it. If you ever travel to the great Southwest, call us. We have plenty of room for guests.

Lois Devine Mackey Married for the past almost 18 years to Rusty Mackey, Cols. Academy, class of 60, and we spend about 85% of the year in S. Florida as he is a real estate developer with projects between Coral Springs and Orlando, plus a golf course just north of Myrtle Beach in Calabash N.C. We have 4 children, the youngest (and tallest!) being 14 and ready to enter 9th grade. Tyler is also going to play football so his Dad will help coach. Kathryn is 25, married and teaching 4th grade. Geof is 30, also married, working in sales, and they both live within a few miles of us. Tracy is 33 and lives with her husband and our first granddaughter just above Orlando - the baby was born in January so we are enjoying the new status of grandparenthood. Being on a school schedule for all these years still allows me time to garden, go to the gym, volunteer at school, sing in the church choir and I'm back to knitting - the babies are arriving in large numbers to the kids' friends and I'm on my fourth blanket in 6 months! We also have a black lab who turned out to be a show dog and what a different world that is! Westminster was a total zoo but fun.

We come back to Columbus every summer even with all our parents gone now, and the time flies by. How fortunate we were to grow up when and where we did - the roots are deep. The older we get, the more aware we become of what a blessing it is to have good health and good friends.

Caroline Dozer Heddleson David and I have been married 32 years. (It only seems like a life sentence.) I am a Supervisor with Medco Health Solutions, the largest prescription benefit management company in the country. I work with the companies that provide prescription coverage as part of the benefit package for employees. David is retired and loves it!!

Our daughter Tina is married to Matt Wolf and they live in Bexley. (No grandchildren yet.) Our son Sean lives at Polaris, an area in the far north of Columbus. We feel very lucky to have both our children near us.

David and I enjoy traveling, especially cruises We owned a travel agency for 20 years. I am still a big Ohio State fan. Matt, Tina and I go to all the OSU football games. I can't believe it has been 40 years. Our son just attended his Bexley 10 year reunion. Tina graduated from Bexley 12 years ago. We can't be that old!

(Ann) Carol Epstein Aurnou Never would have believed 40 years could pass so quickly. 4 years at Ohio University, 20 years of living in Detroit, Mi. and 16 years back in Bexley and now Columbus. I have 3 children ages 28,24 and 22 and 3 beautiful grandchildren. I took an early retirement after 26 years with the Social Security Administration and love every minute of it. I don't know how I had the time to work every day. My husband, Michael is from Brooklyn, NY. He has never been able to develop a taste for my favorite cuisine's from Whitecastle and Rubino's. Linda Bender Goldner and I remained close friends until her death. She was a beautiful, funny, and caring person and I miss her very much.

Don Feinstein I have been a practicing lawyer in Columbus for 32 years, being the senior partner in a small business law firm. That firm merged this year into a larger firm. I went into the food business as a Wendy's restaurant franchisee over 25 years ago and that business has grown to the point I am almost entirely phased out of law. Our restaurant company is now involved as both a Wendy's and Cinnabon franchisee in Texas, Louisiana, and California as well as Columbus.

We live in Worthington. I have two step-children in college, two grown sons and a five year old granddaughter. On the personal side, I am married to Chris and we just celebrated our 9th anniversary.

Ted Fisher Ted and Judy continue to live in Bexley. They have been married for 35 years this summer and are awed by this milestone. Daughter Abra, who lives in Charlotte, had a daughter in June - the first grandchild. Son Evan, who lives in NYC, will be married in Denver on Aug. 4th - and that's why Ted can't be at the reunion! Ted is a partner in the law firm of Porter Wright Morris & Arthur. Ted remains active in the community and presently is Chairman of the Board of Wexner Heritage Village.

Judith Franz Wood Since leaving Bexley High School, Judy went to Miami University and graduated from the College of Education with a Major in English. Happily married to her husband David S. Wood for 36 years, they are the parents of four children: Elizabeth Wood Isaly, David S. Wood, Jr., Catherine Wood Miller, and Sara Wood and grandmother of two: Matthew H. Isaly, Jr., Andrew McCammon Miller. Judy has been a very active community volunteer and holds many Board positions for non-profit organizations throughout the Columbus area. Currently, Judy is the Owner and President of The Daisy Basket, Inc., a floral design studio and special event company based in the Columbus area for the last 18 years. Throughout Judy's entire career as an event planner, her most enjoyable events have been her own children's weddings. Judy also enjoys traveling and spending time at her second home in South Florida.

Joyce Friedman Lynn The teaching talents of Mrs. Amos and Miss McCurdy and serving as Club Editor of the Torch launched this '62 BHS graduate's career as a journalist. I was as a political reporter in Washington, D.C. during the 1970s. Since moving to San Francisco in 1981, I have written about matters of the mind, especially dreams and spirituality. Recent events have melded the two arenas into a search for ways to report the truth. I also teach people who want to use dreams to empower their work and their well-being.

I love living in the awesome cities of the East and West coasts but the community and the fine people I am grateful to have shared formative years with at Bexley High School continue to infuse my life.

Nancy Fritsche Gensch Wolf and I have been living in Snowmass Village, Colorado - and loving it!- for over 30 years! It's been an amazing place to raise a family and spend a life! Skiing, hiking, and biking are our way of life, and we wouldn't trade it for the world. Our oldest son got married on September 15 last year - the first Saturday "after." It was a beautiful but very poignant time. Our younger son is a skilled and passionate big wall climber.. . what a calling that is!

Wolf is a general contractor, fabulous ski instructor, and amazing biker.. .he's sort of a middle-aged adrenalin athlete!

I received a Masters in Psychology from Regis University in December of 2000 and then trained at Pacifica Graduate Institute for a specialty in working with dreams. I've begun my practice - which is fascinating and lots of fun. Sure would love to see some old Bexley friends in Snowmass! Come visit!

Mary Lou Garves For the past 25 years I have worked in the Operating Room at Children's Hospital in various capacities: statt nurse, statt development and orientation coordinator. In the last five years, I have worked part time in the Children's Surgery Center. I am also an adjunct faculty member at both Columbus State Community College and Central Ohio Technical College (Newark), teaching Surgical Technology students.

Highlights for me in recent years include going on a medical mission trip to Ecuador, serving at my church as a Team Coordinator of our Care Ministries (similar to health ministries), getting a Master Degree in Allied Health Education, and enjoying my six great-nieces and one great-nephew - all of whom are under the age of five years!

Bruce Gilbert Greetings classmates, I am still living in Bexley (one trick pony) and still married after 33 years (again seemingly a one trick pony) to Lori Stein Gilbert. We have raised two more Bexley graduates: Jennifer Gilbert Lewis now married to recent EMMY winner Jason, (ABC Sports), living in Westport, Ct. and getting a PHD in Clinical Social Work at NYU (asks me a lot how long I've felt like that); Aaron Gilbert getting married to Carl Schaeffer's (Bexley class of something or other) daughter, and joining me in business (says I must improve my computer skills). Did not overthrow the government with the help of my big sister (as expected); became a real estate developer instead (but there still may be time.) Speaking of time, Paul Simon just wrote a song because everyone was telling him he was old. He pointed out that the universe is old, the earth is old, Jesus is old; he's NOT old. That's my take on the subject. Will not be at reunion; will be watching Ted Fisher's son get married in Denver instead.

Ruth Ann Glick Blank Ronnie (Ronald Blank '58) have been married 37 years this June. We have 2 grandchildren, Evan and Abbey, from our daughter Amy Blank Gosdanian, '87, and our son-in-law Aram. We are expecting another grandchild in June from our son Andrew Blank, '85, and our daughter-in-law Nancy Mallory, who teaches Social Studies at Bexley High. Our daughter Katherine, '88, is a teacher in Cincinnati.

Sandra Goldstein Morrow Tom and I have been married for 38 years and have two sons, Andy and Eric, Bexley grads of '86 and '88. I have two grandchildren, Caroline and Ethan. They moved back to Columbus from Colorado. It is wonderful to have them close by. I have a terrific daughter-in-law and hope to have one more!

I have a stationery business that I have had for 23 years. Through my business I have had the opportunity to have quite a few classmates as clients for wedding, bar and bat mitzvah invitations and other stationery needs. (P.S. I discount!)

Barry Goodman I am an artist-jeweler-sculptor together with my wife Ivana. We do art shows/craft shows in the Eastern half of the USA. I have 4 grandchildren, 2 and 2. I have had a heart attack and lost the sight in my left eye. Been married 4 times and keep pushing the edge. I enjoy life now and still have the "will to do and the soul to dare."

Peggy Gregg Jackson After marrying in 1964, we moved to Miami, Florida in 1967 where I graduated from Univ. of Miami and then got my Masters of Social Work in Miami in 1970 and began work as a psychotherapist at a community mental health center. We had my daughter that year also and six months later we bought a a motel in Lauderdale-By-the-Sea and lived there and ran it while still working. Three years later our son was born. In 1984 we moved to Sanibel Island off the coast of Ft. Myers and lived in a piling home on a lake. Four years later we moved into town (Ft. Myers) to keep up with our son's athletic trips. Both kids are married, have 2 children each, live nearby are in our church and we share many activities and friends in common from church. In the 90's I was Director of Social Services for a Home Health Agency and currently am the social worker for and AID'S clinic doing therapy and helping to obtain grants. We enjoy travel (just got back from 2+ weeks in Italy) and I teach history to 2 grandchildren for their homeschooling. Looks like all four will be home schooled. We do lots of field trips. In '98 we bought a 75 year old 3 bedroom farmhouse on a mountain river near Gatlinburg, Tenn. once owned by Dolly Parton. It is on Parton Lane and Dolly's birthplace which she owns again is just up the mountain behind us. We go there several weeks a year and rent it out nightly the rest of the time. If your are vacationing in that area check our site (gatlinburg-dollywood.com). The kids love tubing on the river and bonfires and hiking. The smokey Mountains certainly are special. With all the family nearby in Ft. Myers and good health we feel extremely blessed. Our son works in our property management business so we can leave and he runs things. We may cut back but have no plans to retire. Hoping to see you all at the reunion.

Steve Grossman I have spent most of my career in the Recycling Industry, both in Columbus and Tampa, Florida, where I am President of The Grossman Group, Inc., a Company devoted to recycling and waste reduction. My fiancee, Meg MacLeod and myself enjoy travel, the theatre, fine dining and especially my children, Jimmy, 33, Tammy, 29 and her husband Blake Thompson and their daughter, Raegan. Meg and I live in Westerville, and truly enjoy the smaller town atmosphere, surrounded by everything else we enjoy.

Leslie Gutter Married the former Gloria Gaffin (Eastmoor '64). We have 7 children and 9 grandchildren. Retired from Nationwide Insurance (29 years) as Controller of the Corporate Service Division. We spend our winters in the Breckenridge subdivision, Estero, Florida.

When we are not traveling or playing with the Grandchildren, we spend time volunteering wand having fun. Volunteering includes past president, treasurer and current board member of our synagogue and a hemophilia advocacy organization, FAMOHIO, Inc. I am also a board member of our Condominium Association.

Kathy Julian Goldberg I married Gerry Goldberg, (no relation - he's from Canton) and this year we had our 30th anniversary - that went by way too fast! No children or grandchildren - just Jake the Wonder Dog! I was a dental hygienist for over 20 years. In 1980 I was appointed to the Ohio State Dental Board by governor Rhodes - the first woman/hygienist ever on the Board. I have since done a complete career change, switching from health to the arts. Currently I'm doing freelance fundraising for small arts organizations - writing grants and putting to work all that honors English I learned at Bexley! Worked for both Players Theatre and Contemporary American Theatre Company before striking out on my own. I perform occasionally, most recently for Columbus Children's Theatre and Gallery Players. I also teach aerobics 3 times a week. Gerry & I love boating, and this year he is Commodore of our boat club. We also ski, hike and travel when we get the chance. Life is truly good! Looking forward to slowing down the "work stuff" and doing more of the "fun stuff"!!

John Karn I've had a blessed life on this earth, with three wonderful sons: Ron, at Franklin County Children's Services; Bruce, an ordained minister - vineyard; and Tom, at World Com (?). Still driving for yellow Transportation. Retirement is close, marriage is closer. I am getting married again in two weeks. Pray for me.

Kathy Kastner These 40 years have found me teaching in Elyria, Ohio, administering adult education programs in Lakewood, Ohio, completing a Ph.D. in Adult Education at OSU, and working at the Ohio Department of Education, retiring in 1998. I returned part-time to the ODE to the Office of Educator Preparation where my duties include completing an annual report on teacher education programs at Ohio's universities. I've enjoyed teaching part-time at OSU, working in the area of professional development, serving as president of the Ohio Association for Adult and Continuing Education, and serving on several advisory boards. Other highlights include travels far and wide and winning an Emmy in 1979 for an adult basic education public service announcement. By far the most significant event was meeting Cliff Shuster on the Broad Street bus. Our COTA romance blossomed into marriage in 1995. I continue to keep in touch with some classmates and enjoy crossing paths with those who live in the Bexley environs.

Barry Kayne Dear Ron & Committee: I was thrilled to hear from you I feel like someone who was found after a remote journey to the other end of the world. I appreciated your initiative to bring everyone together. It is great to be alive and know that there are wonderful survivors of the Class of '62. Frankly, I really miss my classmates and I cherish those old Bexley Days. I wish that I could have provided that environment for our son who is in his second year at the USAFA. I do have a very deep respect for mid-western values and my fond memory of old friends. You all are still the best people that I have ever known.

My story is one that I could not have predicted, other than my years at OSU. Following graduation from the College of Dentistry in 1969 I joined the US Navy and served with the Dental Corps in Yokosuka, Japan. After a two-year tour of duty and a lot of sightseeing in SE Asia, and skiing and partying, I returned to the USA. I then headed to south Miami Beach to practice dentistry and get settled. My office was two blocks from the beach and life was just too much fun. Sort of confusing for an adult to continuously be on spring break. Luckily I received a visit from a dear Japanese friend and a year later we were married. Since that time in the sun, I went to grad school at the U. of PA. and then remained in academics for a number of years. Our son Ari was born in Philadelphia in Oct. of 1981. Shortly thereafter we moved to Wilmington, DE. where we still reside. I practice Periodontics in an office adjacent to our regional hospital. I have been involved with the usual leadership stuff in organized dentistry. My greatest reward comes from directing continuing ed. for our state dental society and from my appointment at "Penn." In the summer of 2002 I will become the President of the Jewish Federation of Delaware. Hobbies include enjoying the company of my wife (Reiko), my son, and my friends. We enjoy skiing, gardening, music, eating and traveling. Enough! We are passionate about the well-being of our community and this world. I hope that our classmates have found peace, good health, and meaning in their lives. Looking forward to the reunion and seeing "old" friends. I miss you so much.

Miriam Kuhn Blalock I'm still a hospital psychiatric nurse, a nursing union representative, and a children's ministry teacher at my church. I have a husband and 2 grown sons. We enjoy attending OSU alumni meetings in Minnesota and even meeting people from Bexley there.

Ellen (Landsman) Bober Hi carol. it's not possible for me to attend . . . that's hot and heavy into our busy holiday season this year (the jewish high holiday season in a synagogue office rivals the easter and christmas seasons in a church office . . . but the time frame changes every year!) have sent the form for the booklet, but figured you'd prefer the bio in this form, so here goes:

Husband Steve and I just celebrated our 34th anniversary. Son Jason, 32, lives and works in Seattle. Daughter Jessica, 28, with husband Michael and stepdaughter Jessica (!), lives in Henderson NV. I retired from the summer Renaissance Festival and because nature abhors a vacuum, I'm now the president of the Colorado branch of the Taoist Tai Chi Society. After 7 years taking & teaching classes & being on the board, it was my turn. I've been executive secretary/administrative assistant at Rodef Shalom for 14 years! . . .second in seniority only to my boss, the exec director, who's been here 18 years. How time flies when you're having fun!

Hope the reunion goes well. regards to all.

Brian Michaelson I am Professor of Computer Science at Palomar College, have served as Governor at Large of the Faculty Association of California Community Colleges, former Chair of the Computer Science Department, and am soon to celebrate my 34th Wedding Anniversary. We live in Del Mar, CA and have two sons. One has just graduated Law School, and the other, can you believe will be a Senior at Ohio State University in the Fall? He made that choice himself, but truly is a Southern California boy. My Mom still lives on South Roosevelt, is doing Water Aerobics and Line Dancing.
    Brian

P.S. Does anyone remember using the top of the old gym for P.E. when the BHS was being expanded? We were playing archery until someone shot Mr. Duffy with an arrow! Then, we played bridge!!, until it was warm enough to go back outside.

Carol Miley Middaugh Roger and I will celebrate our 40th anniversary August 17. We have two daughters and four grandchildren. Our eldest daughter, Wendy, has an 18-year-old son, Ryan, and a 14-year-old daughter, Jessica. Kelly has two sons; Logan, 7, and McCoy, 4.

Roger and I both retired just about three years ago and highly recommend it. We have traveled both before and since that time, preferring cruising to almost any other mode. We had planned a cruise to Australia and New Zealand this fall but decided to build a new house instead. The house was completed this spring and we are thoroughly enjoying living the quiet life in rural Fairfield County.

We continue to serve as volunteer supervisors at the Lutheran Social Services Champion Avenue food pantry each month.

Steve Miller I have been married to Kathy for 36 years. Our sons, Chris and Ted and their wives have given us 4 grandchildren; Sam, Emily, Mia and Jane. They are true blessings. Kathy and I have lived in Bloomington for 32 years and I am a senior investment officer at the State Farm Insurance Companies. Although I have lived in Illinois for all these years, I remain a loyal Buckeye football fan. Thank you for doing all this work on the reunion and the notebook.

Marilyn Moffatt Scheiderer The past 10 years have been good. Our three children are all doing well. We have added a daughter-in-law and first grandchild to our family. Twenty years ago I missed the reunion because we were refurbishing a 150 year old building into a general store. Now we have just completed redoing it again, only this time into our beautiful new retirement home. It was hard giving up our home in the country, but this will give us the freedom to close up and leave for extended periods of time. After 40 years of trying to decide what I wanted to do when I grew up, I finally found a career that I love. Six years ago I became a teaching assistant in a high school multi-handicapped class. There are lots of challenges and lots of heartaches, but there are also lots of rewards and fun times. I am just getting a good start on my career and Tom is thinking retirement!

Can't believe we are getting to that age!

Sally Morrow Mazza I've moved down to the beach. (See above). I'm still single, and still looking for that wonderful guy. Maybe I"ll find him back at our class reunion. Ha, ha!!

I was honored by a former student, and was entered into the Who's Who Among America's Teachers in 1996. Then in 2000 I was selected as my school site's Teacher of the Year, which was a wonderful honor. I am still teaching in Tustin, CA and still loving it.

My biggest news is that I became a grandma for the first time this past March. My older son Don, had his first baby boy, Ryan Dominic Mazza on March 3rd. It's pretty special to be a grandma! My son Mark is living close to me and is doing well as a snowboard rep for Orange and LA county. So all is well with me.

Sue Murray Newman Moved to Muskegon, Michigan when I was 22 and am still here! Raised my sons right on Lake Michigan. We were a 6 minute walk through the woods to the beach for 18 years. It was great - almost always had the beach to ourselves. Lake Michigan and the sand dunes are amazing. I was widowed in 1992 and now work at Mercy Hospital in Muskegon as a secretary in the Radiology Department. It is very interesting and keeps me hopping. Working with young X-ray techs just out of college is great fun! My son Stephen is 31 and lives in Sarasota, Florida. My son Adam (age 28) and wife Regan live in Phoenix, Arizona. Great places for Mom to visit, but not in the summer! No grandchildren, just three dogs between them! Suits me just fine! Haven't made it to a reunion since our 10th so am eager to see everyone!

Kathie Newhouse DeVoe I'm still living in Upper Arlington and have been married to Steve DeVoe ('61) since 1995. We have 4 children between us. Steve's daughter Stephanie is a U.S. Probation Officer in Chicago. Son Stephen is at OSU majoring in Environmental Science. My son Rob is an FBI Agent in Cleveland and my daughter Maggie is married to Gavin Freytag, living in Bexley and expecting their first child Aug.15. My grandson Robert age 4 is the joy of our lives. Steve and I gratefully enjoy good health and love to ski, play golf, travel and grow orchids. We are each other's best friends!!! Life is good!

Karen Packard Kosmalski Wish I could join you all for 2002 reunion. Packard family reunion takes place - same time in Maine. Recently returned from Ireland - where I worked to complete genealogy study in time for family reunion. Since Hal's retirement in 2002, we've been enjoying our grandchildren, Lauren & her new brother Aidan.

Finally finding time together to garden, travel & redesign our home. Life is good.. .very good.

Donald Partsch Career: Being unable to decide what I want to be when I grow up. I've held positions in many public and private settings; teaching, counseling, child protective services, adult rehabilitation, clinical program design and management, etc. Currently I am enjoying the perk of working at my home office and traveling state-wide, performing quality assurance monitoring for several large state government programs.

Family: I have been a single parent for many years and have two wonderful sons, Jonathan and Andrew. Jonathan is a musician, vegetarian, environmental activist, and is currently putting his Wittenberg University degree in geology to work with an international environmental consulting firm. Andrew is a film and philosophy buff, and my fishing buddy. He currently attends Kenyon College, where he is working on a dual major in psychology and philosophy.

Interests: I am an amateur geologist, a collector of pre-historic Native-American artifacts, as well as tribal and folk art of Africa, Mexico and the Pacific. I am a gardener of both veggies and flowers (especially day lilies), an occasional watercolor painter and avid fly fisherman and reader, who, in his spare time enjoys listening to and learning about classical music.

Lee Anne Powers Young After teaching in Reynoldsburg for 7 years, daycare for 4, subbing in Groveport for 10, I 've been at Kohl's on Hamilton Rd. for 10 years - 8 as supervisor. My husband Mike and I have been married 37 _ years and in and out of antiquing for 24! My greatest accomplishment is my only child Matt, 29, 7 feet tall, an art teacher and varsity tennis coach at Pickerington High. Married 4 _ years with 2 Rotweillers. At this moment he's trying to get an interview to be on the next "Survivor" show. (To mom's dismay)

Marylin Moffatt Schneiderer & I are still best friends (from 7th grade!) as are our husbands. We are family for each other.

Steve Rosenthal I have now been married for 34 years (how many?) and have two wonderful sons. My wife is an early childhood teacher. My oldest son, Michael lives in Chicago and woks as a computer consultant. He will be getting married in March, 2003. Matthew just graduated from Duke Law School in May 2002, and will be working for a law firm in St. Louis this fall. I work as a self-employed Vocational Expert. I help various court systems assess earnings capacity and employability of persons involved in divorce or have been involved in an injury or accident.

Marcia M. Ruhling Happily looking forward to retirement after one more year of teaching health to 7th & 8th graders. Son, Christopher, transfers to Ohio University this Fall. Athens is especially beautiful in the Fall and has a great smaller town environment.

Marilyn Rhuling Schuetz Wayne and I recently moved into our "retirement house - smaller and one floor. Teaching 2nd grade for one or two more years. Daughter Casey is married and lives in Valparaiso; daughter Emily returns to school for another bachelor's degree - this time in education.

Karen Scheiderer Hacker Thanks for all the hard work planning this reunion; it sounds like it will be a lot of fun. Unfortunately that's about the time we'll be moving so I won't be able to attend. You can include this bio info in the booklet:

I retired in June after 30 years of teaching (mostly Title I in a middle school). It doesn't seem quite real yet but probably will when Sept. rolls around. My husband is also retiring as pastor of a Lutheran church (and hopefully our new addition will be finished). We have loved living in Ann Arbor (I've never forgotten my Columbus roots but A2 is a pretty cool place!) these past 27 years but have decided to leave the Midwest and will be moving to North Carolina. Our daughter lives in Boston where she just graduated from law school (and has a job!) and her husband is completing his residency in anesthesiology. Our son, a photographer (still, film, video), recently moved from Chicago to Los Angeles so we have kids to visit on both coasts! My husband and I are excited about beginning our "second adulthood" in the friendly South!

Joan Schlezinger Kass I have been married for 34 years to Nick Kass. We have two children; Andrew is an investment banker with Credit Suisse in San Francisco, and Liz is going into her second year of medical school at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons where she is in a combined MD/PHD program.

We have lived in Port Washington, a beautiful town on the north shore of Long Island, for 24 years. As of this writing and after raising our children here and my teaching for many years, our house is now on the market, and we are getting ready to move to Manhattan (address unknown!). I am eagerly if anxiously looking forward to the move. I do get back to Bexley to visit my soon- to -be 92 year old Dad (Bexley class of 1928) and my brother Howard and sister Anne who lives in Cincinnati. Although my current address and phone number will soon be history, I can be reached at: JS! Kass@aol.com Looking forward to the reunion!

Lewis Schottenstein I remain in Bexley and I have really enjoyed it. I never remarried and my son remains in Bexley also. He is married with two beautiful children, a boy and a girl. They are in the Bexley school system too. I am having a great time with my grandchildren and they live near me.

I own Federated Mortgage Co. and I also deal with real estate investments. I cannot see myself retiring from my work. I love every minute of the day, and the only problem is that time is going by too fast.

Sondra Schwartz (alias: Windancer) As I am first and foremost a dancer, I want to share with you:
that every footfall is a prayer!

My greatest contribution to the world is my daughter who is going to be a freshman at University of Oregon in Eugene this fall. (She is a jewel!). On her 18th birthday I made her a time capsule ,painted a picture of the Golden Gate Bridge on it and included all of her most important childhood mainstays, including a book of poetry I wrote called Going Back In Time.

My most valuable experience is my training as an Expressive Arts Therapist ( in the last 10 years) using dance, drawing ,and journal writing for helping others as well as myself in healing. My heart's work has been 25 years as a high school teacher in the inner-city of Oakland, California where I am hired to teach Spanish, but I actually help young third world people with developing life skills, values clarification, building self-esteem,conflict resolution and creating community. Perhaps what I do best with the kids is stay connected to them. It seems to be what they've missed in their lives (and I feel that I do a pretty good job of it from time to time!).

I have written two children's books: one about Jazz called Music in her Heart and a bilingual one about plancton and whales which is a myth about how the stars got in the sky. It is called: Light Up the Sky /Se illuminen el Cielo. I have also written a book about Cancer Prevention called Medicine Cabinet for the 21st Century and I am currently writing a book called Consume Your Ass Off about how we live in aculture which is focused on a seduction which drwas us into comsuming in such quantity that we are killing ourselves off .

I have two dogs and a house with a swimming pool that was my dream as a child but is more of a head ache as an adult.

I thought on the day of high school graduation that It was the best day of my life. But, here I am 40 years later, still in high school, and I am making it work. I hope you all come to San Francisco and come to see me. Bless you all and please stay connected. As I grow older, I am aware how grateful I am for all those who have brought me joy. Thanks to all of you! Much love to all and you are in my daily blessings!
    Love, Sondra Schwartz

Judy Seff Benenstein I have 4 grandchildren, with the oldest, a girl, 31/2, and the youngest are triplets (2 boys and a girl), who will be two at the end of March. My husband, Michael and I have recently celebrated our 35th anniversary; he has retired from the Franklin County Department of Human Services, but continues to serve as a part time chazan (cantor) at the synagogue. I am still with the Math Department at Ohio State University with administrative responsibilities, rather than teaching, at the present. I serve as the coordinating advisor for the math majors, evaluator of math credits taken at other institutions (domestic and abroad) and one of the math representatives at orientation for honors students. Looking forward to learning about the rest of our classmates!

Stan Sells Married 26 years, wife Diana who is a certified public accountant and director of operations for a nonprofit organization. Two sons: Brian, age 23, graduated Univ. of Chicago and the Harris Graduate School of Public Policy. Brian served a brief stint in the Peace Corp in Uzbekistan but was evacuated due to 9/11. Currently pursuing a law degree at Univ. of Iowa. Aaron, age 21, 4th year engineering student at Case Western Reserve having just completed an 8-month coop with IBM. I have worked for the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services for the past 28 years. Primary focus in recent years has been on the development and implementation of Ohio's Welfare Reform initiative. Currently, I am the Assistant Deputy Director of the Office of Family Stability. I anticipate retirement in 2004. Also for 28 years I have lived in Victorian Village (in the Short North here in Columbus) where Diana and I restored an 1886 brick. I am an avid gardener and birder and for most of my career was a walking commuter. I participate in a variety of community and church-related activities.

George Slater Dear Classmates, Usually our Bexley reunions were around the 4th of July so I had anticipated that date and blocked off the time on my schedule. The 1st week of August we're at our place on Lake Tahoe.

After 25 years of practicing general internal medicine in Walnut Creek, CA, I sold my practice and have become a Hospitalist, a new sub-specialty of internal medicine. My life style has improved allowing more time with the family and more time for mt. biking, snowboarding, Hobie Cat sailing, fly fishing, scuba diving and M3 driving.

My wife , Patty, is still a full-time ophthalmologist in Walnut Creek. Our 19 year old daughter is a 2nd year community college student (performing arts). Our 16 year old daughter is a junior in high school and heavily involved in dramatics.

My dad and mom are deceased but my sister and step-mom are still living in Columbus. Perhaps I can rearrange my summer schedule. Get Ron Howard and the rest of the cast of American Graffiti to show and we would have to come.

Ronald L. Solove Following graduation from OSU law school, I spent three years in private practice and the next 14 as a professor of law at Capital University Law School, the last three as Associate Dean. During my teaching career, I also taught at the University of Hawaii Law School and in an education program for Japanese lawyers in Tokyo, where I was also a lecturer at Chuo Ga Quin University Law School.

In 1987, I was appointed as a Domestic Relations Judge for Franklin County and I was elected to a full term in 1988. While on the bench, I became the founding president of the Ohio Association of Domestic Relations Judges. Upon leaving the bench in January 1995, I went back into private practice. Today the Solove Law Office includes myself and my partner, an associate attorney, and three support staff. I am among the first Board Certified Family Relations Law Specialists in the state and we limit our practice to family law issues.

My wife Donna and I have been married for 37 years and have lived in the German Village area for the last 24 years. We have two sons, David, the Boss Clown with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, and Adam, an information systems consultant with Diamond Cluster International. Adam, his wife Sandy, and our granddaughter Rebecca live in Bexley and are expecting our second grandchild in December. David lives on the circus train.

Nancy Stock Hacker I sell distinctive homes in the SF Bay area for Prudential California Realty. I have 2 West Highland Terriers. My son has a Master's degree in Statistics & is teaching High School Trigonometry & is the H.S. tennis coach. I can hardly wait to see you all !!

Barbara Tapper Freilich I am still working as a Financial Advisor (V.P. with ?illegible? and Co., LLP). This will make 20 years in the industry. My children are grown. David is working on his PhD in neuro-science and Hony (?) is an Information Engineer with the National Cancer Institute, in Bethesda, MD. My husband, a trial attorney, and I are looking forward to a quiet home and time to garden. Looking forward to the 40th reunion - it will be my first time back!

Bill Thomas Bill Thomas was five foot nine in 1962. Now he's over six feet, so you might not recognize him. Under Bill's picture in the Bexleo it says, "He will not die of overwork." So far, so good, and much fun. Stanford, BA Philosophy, varsity letter in boxing, motorcycles on and off the road. University of Hawaii, MA Philosophy, much body surfing, a little teaching. Since 1970 much poetry composed and learned by heart.

Bill devoted most of the '80s to courting Sharky Roberts, whom he eventually lured to California. They married each other in 1994 and are glad. They live in Carmel, a short walk to the Carmel Beach and a short drive to the Big Sur Wilderness. Since 1987 Bill has been a "biographical dramatist," researching, composing, and performing under the names "Taelen Thomas" and "The Lingo Kid." Most of his shows are for private and corporate audiences, and he has much fun pretending to be Daniel Boone, Mark Twain, Jack London, Theodore Roosevelt, John Steinbeck, and - Hurray for the Class of '62 All of you

Lorraine Weber Freitag My husband (Herb) and I have lived on Clearwater Beach on the Gulf of Mexico coast of Florida for the past 21 years, and we love it. Our 2 grown kids and 5 grandchildren live pretty near, so we get to spend many great times with them. After enjoying teaching in Reynoldsburg public schools for 12 years, I have spent most of the years since working as the education director in a community church, which I also enjoy. Outdoor activities include brisk walking on the beach, tennis, and gardening. Hello to all '62 classmates!

Bonnie June Wesley Sellers Bonnie June Wesley Sellers graduated from Bob Jones University (BJU), in Greenville, SC. While at BJU she met Larry G. Sellers and they subsequently married in Columbus, OH, on 26 Aug 1967. From 1967 to 1972, they lived in Raleigh, NC, where Bonnie worked at an insurance company while Larry completed a PhD in entomology at North Carolina State and taught at UNC-Chapel Hill. For one very interesting year, 1972-1973, they lived on Mackinac Island, MI, working for a small private college. In 1973-1974, they moved to Ames, IA, 1973-74, and worked for Iowa State University. However, in 1974, Larry was offered a teaching position at Louisiana Tech University (LTU) and they moved to Ruston, LA, a small town (pop. around 20,000) in north Louisiana. Since 1974, Bonnie and Larry have maintained an uninterrupted association with LTU, where Bonnie serves as administrative assistant to the biomedical, industrial and mechanical engineering programs, and Larry teaches biology. Their only child, Lindsey Anne Sellers, was born in 1982, and is now a sophomore music major at LTU with hopes of eventually obtaining certification as a music therapist. All three of the Sellers are very active at Trinity United Methodist Church. Bonnie and Larry look forward to retirement sometime after Lindsey's graduation from LTU. Exact date and place of retirement are still to be determined. They are open to suggestions!

Jim Westwater Here's living proof you can go to college for 10 years, get a PhD, and STILL not know what you're going to do. But thankfully, the light turned on shortly after I left OSU. I've spent most of the past 30 plus years creating and marketing pieces of giant-screen, multi-image photography which I set to works of classical music and perform live with symphony and chamber orchestras throughout the country. I call this art form (the fusion of photography and classical music) "symphonic photochoreography." If you'd like to know more about it, please visit WestwaterArts.com. While at OSU, I spent two summers in Alaska doing glaciological research for the Byrd Polar Institute. That was a "life changing" experience. The beauty of the Earth I saw and felt there had an incredible effect on me. Later, one of my Alaska photographs was published on the cover of Saturday Review magazine. For two years I was a National Endowment for the Arts "Artist in the Schools" (one year in Montana and one in Ohio) and for a field season I was the National Science Foundation's "Artist in Antarctica." I also did a book of photography called OHIO. I'm married to a wonderful friend and life companion, Merrilynn. We met in Utah. After living in dear old Bexley for many years to raise a family, we packed up our things in the fall of 2004 and moved to the scenic splendor of Utah, about an hour south of Salt Lake City. We are blessed with two fine kids who are a constant source of joy. Our daughter loves the West and now lives in Montana. Our son is aspiring to be a rock'n roll drummer! One thing I think I've learned over the years... the journey through life goes better... when we hold each others' hands. Love and Peace, Jim

Helen Wilson Hamilton After 33 years of marriage and 5 children, I am thrilled to be single again. I own and operate a 100-bed nursing home in Dayton. Really enjoy traveling. Looking forward to retirement.

Jack Wood Ron, How nice to receive your note! I now live just outside Portland, OR. I have been here in the Northwest now for almost thirty years. I did a stint in the Peace Corps out of college then worked in Saudi Arabia and Israel before returning for an MA at OSU. I worked on Indian reservations in drug and alcohol rehab programs and then for Head Start. After that I spent about twenty years in small market broadcasting. I left the corporate life 7 years ago and have been doing international tourism ever since. Sometimes I take out my own groups and mostly I contract with companies to run their programs. In the course of this I have made it up to Everest Base Camp several times. I hung around with my wife, Sue, for 12 years and then three years ago we dashed headlong into marriage. She is a VP for Strategic Planning for Kaiser Health. we don't have any kids but are a doting Aunt and Uncle. I am still trying to figure out what I want to do when I grow up (whatever and whenever that is, respectively). I'm not sure that is all bad, though. Your son's job sounds really wonderful!

I hope this reunion will encourage some networking. It would be fun to say hi to some long out of touch classmates. Thanks very much for your work on this reunion. sorry I won't be there. I think Jerry Anthony is coming. Give him a bad time for me. We went skiing and swapped a bunch of lies this last winter. He also ushered at my wedding.

Take care and give me a call if you are ever out this way!
    (Jack) Marcus

P.S. I don't mean to sound sentimental, but could you offer a moment of silence in honor of our deceased classmates, especially Larry and Diane Herwald? I often think of them and hope they have found a peaceful place.! They left us too soon and too tragically.

Mary Wulber Leffler I am still working as a pharmacist at White's Pharmacy and living in Bexley (southland, or course). Steve, my husband of 36 years, is semi-retired (how did he get so lucky?) and we are building a new home in Reynoldsburg on13 acres that belonged to my Dad. Our son Rob ('88) is a pharmacist in Indianapolis and a singing & dancing community theatre enthusiast. Our daughter Becky ('92) is a pharmaceutical sales rep in Cincinnati, married to a Cincinnati police officer and mother to the world's most adorable baby, Samuel, aged 6 months.

Linda Young Mize I am a minister's wife (we have served in the Akron area Pastoral Ministry for 25 years). I have had my own career serving people in the medical field for 15 years. We have one wonderful married daughter in Oakland, CA, and most importantly, I am a very happy and contented person. Blessings to all!

Fahn Zelizer Tishkoff Denny and I are enjoying a change in lifestyle. We just moved to the 21st floor of Miranova, a downtown high-rise condominium overlooking the river. You're all invited to watch Red, White and Boom at our place on July 3rd next year, the same day we'll be celebrating our 37th wedding anniversary.

Two of our 3 children are grown and on their own. Both live in Columbus. Our youngest is a senior at the University of Kansas, so it won't be long before the weekly checks stop! We are blessed that our 3 adorable grandsons, ages 3 1/2, 2, and 6 mos. are close by and we can see them and hug them whenever we feel the need.

I sell mortgages part-time and take pictures of newborn babies at area hospitals part-time. I play bridge and tennis in my spare time. I'm anxious to see everyone in August.
