Grand Canyon Heads to Germany this January

This coming January we’re bringing the Grand Canyon’s majesty across the ocean to Germany for a concert series with the Neue Philharmonie Westfalen. For two concerts in two different northwestern German cities, we’ll perform our popular multimedia piece, Grand Canyon Country, set to Grofé’s famous Grand Canyon Suite.

The multimedia concert piece originated from a 2012 joint commission by the Tucson Symphony Orchestra and Phoenix Symphony to celebrate Arizona’s state centennial. Since then, the piece has seen new performances every concert season—in 2016–17, we’re performing it three times!

Our cross-Atlantic collaboration will also mark the premiere of symphonic photochoreography in Germany. Leading the premiere is NPW’s Music Director Rasmus Baumann, who has also programmed Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess and German composer Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s trumpet concerto Nobody Knows De Trouble I See. This special concert series is part of the NPW’s 20th anniversary season.
