The Nashville Chamber Orchestra recently commissioned James Westwater to create and perform two new photochoreographies exemplifying the Orchestra's motto: MUSIC WITHOUT BOUNDARIES. To engage the community of Nashville, the Orchestra invited local residents to submit their photography on the theme of Nashville: A Great Place to Live, Work and Raise a Family." James Westwater set hundreds of the submitted photographs to two pieces of music chosen by the Orchestra. The result was a multi-arts fusion of music and giant-screen multi-image photography celebrating Music City, through the eyes of its own people. A truly wonderful collaboration between the community and the Orchestra. At right are two of the many responses by local citizen participants in this innovative NCO "Musical Portraits" concert. A DVD of the piece(s) is being considered. |
"Musical Portraits was a wonderfully composed, stimulating, emotional and engaging experience for the six members of our party. We loved what you did, and we certainly hope you and [Music Director] Paul Gambill will collaborate again and again on such bold and original endeavors. Of course, it was typical NCO chutzpah to attempt yet another fusion of seemingly unrelated art and classical music to further challenge the stuffy boundaries of our artistic perceptions. Bravo to you and Paul for a thoroughly entertaining evening." --FW |
"Participating by submitting the photos was as huge bright spot in my life. Couldn't have come at a better time. I have been battling breast cancer for the past year and three months. One of my first outings was to the Symphony to see which of my photos were selected. I was thrilled to participate and attend the concert. I believe it is a great opportunity to pull a larger market share into the Symphony Hall. I brought a friend and we vowed that we should try to attend on a regular basis." --CS |
