National Park Centennial in 2016
The US National Park Service celebrates its 100th birthday in 2016. In honor of the occasion, we put together these programming options for orchestras that are interested in celebrating America the Beautiful and its amazing national parks and monuments.
Orchestras can incorporate a national park theme into concerts for 2016 by choosing from two programming options. The first is a new compilation piece, National Park Suite, which features a series of artistic vignettes from dozens of national parks and monuments, from Yellowstone and Yosemite to Olympic and Arches, the Grand Canyon and Great Smoky Mountains. The imagery is drawn from newly created photography as well as our extensive existing photo library. For this timely programming addition, orchestras can choose from inspiring music options from three composers:
- Beethoven’s “Choral” Symphony No. 9 in D Minor, Op. 125: III. Adagio molto e cantabile
- Copland’s Tender Land Suite: I. Introduction and Love Music; and III. Finale: The Promise of Living
- Dvořák’s “From the New World” Symphony No. 9 in E Minor, Op. 95: II. Largo
The second programming option is to select from our five existing photochoreography pieces that are set in one or more of America’s national parks and choreographed to a variety of music by composers ranging from Mahler and Grofé to Bach:
