Dallas Symphony Premieres Mágico & Pre~Columbia
This September we’re heading to Dallas to premiere our two latest visual concertos, Mágico and Pre~Columbia. The pieces celebrate the beautiful diversity, warmth, and cultural richness of Mexico—both in music and images. Fittingly, the DSO premiere is scheduled for the week of Mexican independence, and will be presented in partnership with the city’s Mexican Consulate.
Pre~Columbia will set the stage with a glimpse into ancient Mexico, where sophisticated civilizations thrived for millennia, leaving impressive symbols of their legacy across the land and influencing the history and cultural identity of Mexico today.
With Mágico we’ll be pulling out the stops, inviting audiences to experience a modern Mexico that few outsiders get to see: 18,000-foot snowcapped volcanoes, 16th century colonial towns, and of course, colorful festivals like Día de los Muertos, Semana Santa and the gathering of millions of monarch butterflies atop central Mexico’s mountains. In Mexico there’s also something very special in the everyday details, so expect plenty of portraiture, images of daily life, and countless surprises around each corner.
Our Creative Director Nicholas Bardonnay photographed thousands of images on location across 18 states in Mexico during the yearlong production. During this time Nicholas also called Mexico home between his concerts in the U.S., and he can’t say enough about the wonderful experiences and the kindness of the Mexican people. Even now, Nicholas fondly refers to himself as an informal ambassador for Mexico, and he’s enthusiastic about dispelling myths about traveling there so as to encourage folks to go experience it firsthand.
Please join Nicholas, and many other fellow travelers, for the DSO’s special event concert on September 13, conducted by Andrés Franco. We’re expecting it to be a very festive evening, and we’re looking forward to bringing the vibrancy of Mexico to Meyerson Symphony Center when we honor our neighbor to the south. ¡Nos vemos pronto!
